JOSH SIMPSON'S TEKTITES
JOSH SIMPSON
Meteorite glass has a will and mind of its own. A Tektite is finished when the meteorite glass and I reach a compromise.
-Josh Simpson
The following video shows Josh Simpson creating a blown meteorite sculpture Tektite in his home studio.
Josh began making Tektite glass years ago, when a friend did a spectrographic
analysis of a type of meteorite composed of glass,
known scientifically as tektite
(from the Greek tektos, meaning
"molten"). By combining the right proportions of
raw materials,
Josh was able to re-create meteorite glass in the studio and started
to make Tektites. One minute tektite glass is liquid, a moment later
it's stone.
Over the last 35 years, his art has evolved as he
experimented and learned from
making countless mistakes. He has
found inspiration in NASA images of Earth
and other natural
phenomena.

Astronaut Cady Coleman poses with husband Josh Simpson and
son Jamey
at Kennedy Space Center. Cady Coleman, Ph.D. is a
NASA astronaut - a
veteran of two space missions, who has logged
over 500 hours in space. She
is assigned to the Expedition 26 crew
and is scheduled to fly to the International
Space Station about the
Russian Soyuz 25 in late 2010. To 'Countdown with

WEDDING BELLS
WEDDING BELLS
Spring is a time of joy, love and beauty. It is a time when we appreciate nature all over again, and it is also a time of expressing our love to that special someone. We represent some of the finest studio jewelers whose wedding bands are of the highest standards and design. Alex Sepkus has a large amount of work to choose from and has captivated customers with his unique designs. His jewelry appears antique, with detailed carving reminiscent of the Renaissance or of the Baroque era, yet the form is modern. Gabriel Ofiesh designs beautiful jewelry, which is noted for its elegant combinations of colored gems set in classic and distinctive gold designs. Primary shapes, such as oval, squares, triangles and circles provide the basis for ring designs exhibiting an almost architectural sensibility. Some are solid gold, some are speckled with a random spray of tiny diamonds, and still others are composed of a pivoting ring face set atop a solid shaft. Diana Heimann's signature line presents a treasure chest of timeless, trend setting bands inspired by art, architecture, nature, the spiritual aspect of love and the need to communicate. I hope we have tempted you to come and take a peek. Hope to see you soon.

Touches of Spring!
Sightings
of crocuses and daffodils are just around the corner. This is a perfect time to freshen up our spaces by adding a touch of spring to our days. We have an excellent selection of garden tiles or plaques by sculptor Richard Abbot from Maine. His company, Home and Garden Ornament, specializes in uniquely decorative/architectural sculpture. All or the pieces are original designs, that is they are NOT impressions or casts of natural artifacts or living creatures, nor are they copies of other persons' work. Richard looks for inspiration from various aspects of nature, as well as drawing upon the rich resources of past art and history. He prefers to use the 'real thing' for subject matter, but will also make use of photographs, paintings and drawings when necessary. His tiles have a galvanized wire cast into the back for easy hanging on any surface, indoors or out, and can also be treated as a tile and set into a wall as a back splash or accent.
Alongside the tiles is
a glass flower by Christopher Belleau of Rhode Island. He and his skilled assistants work the molten glass by coupling traditional hot glass techniques and contemporary innovation.
His work is a great example of American creativity and craftsmanship. Stop by and see this fine collection of garden tiles and glass flowers.

Autumn in Provence
If you have always cherished the allure of Paris and the French countryside, we offer you a collection of ceramics by Chic Rustique, treasures found in Europe during their travels. This great collection of ceramics is sure to add joy and inspiration to this autumn season. Choose from a variety of chickens, Guinea hens, quails, turkeys and mice by French artist Heidi Calliard. On the bottom of each Guinea Hen is a note from Heidi. The translation is as follows: Having been fascinated for more than thirty years by the originality and the elegance of the guinea hens that run free in my garden, it finally came to me that by immortalizing them in a harmonious and timeless object I could convey my love for the guineas to others. --Heidi C. Also included in this collection are faience cicada paperweights. In 1895, the owners of the Tuileries de Marseille commissioned a young talented potter from Aubagne, Louis Sicard (1871-1946), to create a faience paper weight. He chose the shape of a cicada because of its prevalence in Provence. At that time cicadas were also popular with writers and poets in the area. The cicada has since become a symbol of Provence. One of the most famous provincial poets, Frederic Mistral, wrote "Lou souleu mi fa canta". In provincial dialect this means "It's the sun that makes them sing. "Today in Provence you will see many cicadas hanging outside of homes as a "Porte Bonheur" or a symbol believed to bring happiness. If you are out for a stroll or driving by, you will find these wonderful pieces in our window on the corner of Liberty and Main. We wish you a great autumn season.

MOVEMENT IN ART
Graceful movement of a dancer's form is elegantly captured in the kinetic
art of Michael Gard. If you happen to enter the gallery from the Liberty
Street entrance, you can't help to be drawn to the beauty of these magnificent wire sculptures, seemlessly floating in harmony with bubble-like glass discs
by George Cirocco of Salamandra Glass Studios. Your curiosity will
definitely be aroused as to who designed these pieces. To begin with, Michael Gard is a jeweler and sculptor who has maintained a full time craft studio and resides in San Francisco, California. He was born in London, England and has degrees from Manchester Metropolitan University. His work has been featured in museum exhibitions in San Francisco and Seattle. Each of his pieces begins as a clay sculpture of live models which is reproduced in wax. He then uses his own special technique of chaotically weaving wire with each stitch woven by hand and knotting it to apply wire around the entire form. Then he melts the wax away with a resulting three-dimensional wire sculpture that is light and durable. While fine silver is his preferred material, he also works in gold, sterling, aluminum, copper and brass. Complimentary to these figures you see George Cirocco's colorful discs, which are meant to hang and move naturally. For over 20 years, Salamandra Glass has been known as the premier creator of hand blown glass on the New England Seacoast. Each of their pieces is an original art glass creation, handcrafted in the Dover, New Hampshire studio. Stop in to see this wonderful work, along with our new arrivals.

CONTEMPORARY GLASS
Spring is just around the corner, and soon fresh, clear colors will brighten up our landscape after a long, white winter. This is a great time to add fresh color to your interior landscape with
contemporary
glass pieces from our wide selection of hand-blown glass.
Our window on the corner of Main and Liberty features Detroit glassblowers, along with glassblowers from throughout the United States. The tall yellow vase is by Detroit's own Furnace Glass. Michelle Plucinsky and Christopher Nordin have created a studio from a slim rectangle of unused space on one side of a steel processing plant. Both artists have studied in Italy and make up Italian-sounding words for their vases, bowls, candlesticks and goblets - names like "spicona", "cincipo" and "fifavo".
Also featured is Jeff Mack, a master glassblower in Dearborn, Michigan. His piece is the smaller yellow vase in the window. Jeff is a graduate of Bowling Green State University with a degree in Fine Art.
Dan and Joi LaChaussee, creators of the blue and yellow vase, studied at Pilchuck and have shown internationally in Germany, Brazil, Australia and Canada.

The photo above shows the refined work of Geoffrey Beetem from Athens, Ohio. His orbs and marbles are greatly sought after. Other artists featured in our window are RKS Glass Studio from Reading, Pennsylvania, makers of intriguing contemporary pieces like the red Water Ball shown in the top photo. The tall, blue striped vase is by Chico Rodriguez Raskey, originally from Ludington, Michigan, but currently blowing glass at Chico Art Glass in Seattle. His glass is highly influenced by his travels throughout Europe. The clear vase was blown at the Berkshire Center for Contemporary Glass in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts. Glass spiders crawling through the display are from WGK Glass Art Inc., a collective of German glass artists. This is only a sampling of our large collection, but a great pick for bright Spring days! Hope to see you soon,

ARTFUL VALENTINES!
It has often been said that Love makes the world go 'round. This Valentine's Day is a perfect time to present a gift of art to that certain someone. Why not give a hand-blown vase filled with beautiful roses from our glass collection. The vase in the photo on the left is by David Levi of Ibex Glass. Ibex Glass was founded in St. Louis, Missouri, but has since relocated to Washington State. All pieces dated and signed with the Ibex name are produced individually at the furnace, with tools and techniques which have remained essentially unchanged for hundreds of years.
The pink vase in the photo on the right is by Jonathan Winfisky. Winfisky Glass Studio is located in Charlemont, Massachusetts.
Also featured in the photo on the right is jewelry handcrafted by Kristina Kada of Satomi Studio. Kristina's handcrafted jewelry is inspired by the balance of energy
and precision in the natural world. Honoring the centuries-old Japanese tradition of kumihomo, Kristina weaves hand-dyed silk thread into fine cord, pairing color with her modern designs in sterling silver and 22k gold. Satomi Studio rests in the warm mountains of Santa Cruz. These are only a few of our many ideas for gifts crafted with love. Stop by for more gift ideas.

Tom Svec Furniture Design at Selo/Shevel Gallery
Fall of 2008 marks the third year that we will host a showing of furniture designs from the studio and workshop of Tom Svec, Furniture Designer. In the intervening year Tom has continued to incorporate unusual and overlooked material originating in the prolific and generally well managed hardwood forest culture of Northern Pennsylvania. In this year's show, he is trying to integrate lumber species that are less main stream by combining them with wood species more apt to be found in residential environments. In addition to
unabashedly presenting knots, splits, fissures and other imperfections, this furniture offering will also feature color variations and organic lines suggested by the material itself. In a social and political climate that suggests reassessment of how we use our resources, it is Tom's intention to utilize materials that often fall into the lowest value usage areas. By thoughtful focus on their eccentricities, he hopes to bring these over-looked gems into the spotlight, perhaps helping to make the idea of diversity and nonconformity part of our collective aesthetic. Modern architecture, so abundant in Southern Michigan, has also been a source of inspiration. Simple line quality, inclusion of simple geometric solids, and restraint in detailing contribute to what he hopes will be pleasing and visually restful pieces that will transcend the present. As in the past, Tom aims to facilitate a joining of the materials that find their way into his studio with design ideas drawing inspiration from sources as varied as Mondrian and Phillip Johnson. More of Tom Svec's furniture can be seen at http://www.tomsvecfurniture.com.

Glass Sculpture by Jason Antol
This month we are featuring the glass sculptures of Jason Antol. The craftsmanship of his glassblowing is of the highest quality. His main body of work is built in layers of colored and clear glass. Different opaque and transparent colors are added and subracted to create variation in tone and mark. The richly textured color is much like the surface of a canvas painted with oils. His glasswork references the Italian tradition of glassblowing in craft and aesthetic while maintaing a distinctly personal expression. He is influenced by the work of DaVinci, Monet, Tagliapietra, Degas and Rosin. Great backdrops for his work are the contemporary Homefront Textiles with circular patterns echoing the clean forms of Jason's work. Stop by and see us!

Marlene Miller Ceramics and More!
If you are taking a winter's night stroll on a snowy
January evening, stop past our window on Main and Liberty and pause for a moment to see the exquisite ceramic figures of
Marlene Miller, and other complementary objects. The most potent aspect of Marlene Miller's ceramic figures is the evidence of her hand working the material. The clay is allowed to exist as clay-reduction fired stoneware, underglazed and stained with mineral oxides. The surface is a record of marks that express emotion. Her intuitive command of clay and figure enables her to mine a fertile range of expression. Marlene derives much of her inspiration from medieval and religious art and from painters like Francis Bacon, Willem de Kooning and the drawings of Alberto Giacometti. Her figures have a robust sensibility that recalls German Expressionism, Max Beckman in particular. The emotional impact of her pieces can reflect our own sub-conscious insights. After viewing her pieces, you may quietly be compelled to gaze at the moon. Stop by and see us if you are in the area.

MODERN FURNITURE BY TOM SVEC
We are pleased to celebrate our 25th Anniversary with an exhibit of modern furniture by Tom Svec. It is our belief that a person elevates the status of a design object by animating it with regular use. A well-designed object responds by merging the intent of its maker with the needs of the user. These objects can only work their magic if they are given a special place in the daily rituals of people who are willing to respect the creative energy invested in them. We make choices constantly in the things we choose to surround ourselves with.
Located on the Great Island, just east of Lock Haven, PA, the workshop and studio has been in operation for over twenty years. The site has been a center of agriculture and commerce since before the arrival of the Europeans in North America. To this day it remains one of the most prolific sites in the state for Native American artifacts. It seems appropriate to continue with that tradition of hand craftsmanship.
All pieces by Tom are original in concept, minimal in their use of materials, and respectful of the sustainable hardwood timber resources indigenous to the Northeast. The intent is to produce timeless, utilitarian design objects that will enrich the environments in which they are placed. Mindful of the ever-increasing demand by collectors for hand made American Crafts, all pieces are signed and dated. Stop by to see these fine pieces while visiting our new space.

SELO/SHEVEL GALLERY IS ON THE MOVE!

We are very excited to announce
that we are consolidating our two locations on Main Street in early October.
Our gallery at 335 South Main will close and move into a new space connected to our main gallery at 301 South Main at the corner of Liberty in downtown Ann Arbor. After nearly eighteen years in separate locations, we are happy to be together again. Moving together will enable us to show
glass, ceramics, wood, metal, jewelry, mobiles and textiles in new and interesting ways in our windows and on the floor. We hope you will enjoy the wider array of beautiful choices all in one place. During the transition, we are having a great
sale on jewelry, glass and ceramics that will be discontinued or are no longer available. If you have a chance to visit our gallery at 335 South Main Street before it closes at the end of September, you will find some very special pieces at
reduced prices. We will be closed for a short time in late September, enabling us to move all of our inventory and refurbish the galleries. We will still be open twenty-four hours a day on line.
We look forward to our Grand Re-opening reception on Friday, October 19th, which will feature furniture by Tom Svec from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Please join us!

Michael Lambert's whimsical ceramics in one of our Liberty Street windows to celebrate Michael's retirement. We thank him for his 40 years of dedication to creating his wide collection of
Disney-like vessels and serving items, which have never ceased to bring a smile to the viewer's face. His pieces also have an Art Deco flavor. One of these pieces would make a wonderful
Mother's Day
gift. Unfortunately, once our collection is gone, we will not be able to obtain more pieces from Michael. Some of his pieces are featured on our Website, but we have many more to offer at our 301 Main Street gallery. Thank you,
Michael Lambert, for the many years of sharing your talent with the customers of Selo/Shevel Gallery.
